‘My Green Home’ Heros
By Hinal Kale
GreenFootprint.ae is turning 1 on June 5, which is World Environment Day. We want to celebrate nature and biodiversity, not only by planting trees and educating kids about waste reduction and recycling, but we believe in community sharing. We are featuring “My Green Home Heros” that make the UAE greener place and spread love for nature.
GFT: Can you tell us about your passion?
“I’m a Gardener! What’s your Superpower?” This is how I’d describe myself. Gardening is my passion. Since a very young age I’ve been very fond of flowers, nature and gardening. I’ve seen my mother always growing flowers and plants, hence the love for gardening since childhood. I’m a lawyer by qualification but a gardener at heart! I feel a deep sense of connect with nature and earth. Gardening is the only stress buster I know of. The joy I get from growing plants and seeing them flourish is unparalleled!
GFT: What is your recipe for gardening?
Plants need a lot of TLC and sometimes you might catch me having a little téte a téte with them!
Growing plants and having a garden here in the Middle East has its own challenges but the greenery that I’ve seen over the years is mind boggling especially in Dubai. When I look at beautiful gardens and the greenery in the city, it’s hard to imagine that all this is in a desert land! So, never say never and keep growing flowers.
GFT: How many plants variety you have?
I live in Jumeirah 3, Dubai. I’d say I have about 70- 80 different varieties of plants in my garden. These include Hibiscus, Roses, Plumerias, Jasmines, Clerodendrums, Passifloras, Water Lilies, Butterfly pea vines, Spathodea, Cannas, Bougainvilleas, Heliconias, Calliandra, Heliconias, Cassia Javanica, Writhia, Thungbergia, Fruit Trees and I can go on!
GFT: Composting goes with gardening hand in hand.
All my kitchen waste gets converted to rich compost and is used in my garden. Trying to do my small bit towards the environment.
